By now, you probably know to exfoliate before you apply a self-tanning potion for a smooth and even result. But here's a tip you don't hear very often: Gently apply the granular cleanser to avoid irritating the skin, which could cause a breakout. And really, there's no need to up the exfoliation routine since we, according to dermatologist Dr. Kevin Pinski, naturally shed dead skin cells on a monthly basis.

Every time we exfoliate, our skin becomes more sensitive to the sun. Make time to apply and reapply sunscreen. "Sunscreen is a chemical that is activated by the skin to be effective, which takes about 30-45 minutes to become so," explains Dr. Pinski. "It gets absorbed into skin and easily wears off when we perspire or get wet, which explains the need to reapply."

Ladies, the SPF in your cosmetics won't cut it. Invest in a sunscreen that will keep your skin protected. Speak with a dermatologist if you're uncertain about the kind of sunscreen or sunblock that is best for you.

A few sun-savvy tips to pocket:
  • Read the label. Look for microscopic zinc oxide or Parsol 1789 in sun protection products (these are UVA -- the rays that cause sun damage at a very deep level, such as destroying the skin's elasticity -- blockers).

  • A fresh face. If you have acne-prone or oily skin, use sunscreen in gel form instead of lotions.

  • Avoid the SPF sting. If you'll be working up a sweat while outside, consider using sunscreen in wax form above the brow (won't drip in your eyes).
