Swinging Into Summer

By Melissa de la Cruz for Your Look, Your Life

Don't get SAD (seasonal affective disorder) -- since garden-variety unhappiness is tres passe and we only own up to afflictions with cute acronyms, GAD (general anxiety disorder) or even FAD (fashion attrition disorder). After a debilitating winter when the dark dismal days of thermal underwear and rain boots (ugg) never seemed to end, we are overjoyed that summer -- the season of long, lingering days spent in outdoor cafes drinking white wine; of long, lingering days lounging in parks ogling the frisbee-tossing cuties -- is finally, gloriously (pop those corks ladies) here to stay.

But do we say goodbye to flaky, itchy, dry, winter-blah skin only to say hello to flaky, itchy, peeling summer skin? No! Whatever you do this summer, do not forsake your moisturizers. Remember, the vigilant task of looking bronzed, beautiful and bodacious without succumbing to those evil UVA rays means sunless tanning potions (the new ones are guaranteed not to streak or turn your skin Tammy Faye orange), exfoliating lotions, sunblock, and a kickass sunhat (ours is from Burberry). We also love halter-tops, miniskirts and raffia slides -- not necessarily in that order.

For many of us, summer is the time to look a little more carefree, and whether that means forsaking your weekly blow-outs or merely switching to a lighter eyeshadow, it's all about letting your natural beauty shine through. For me, summer means little or no foundation (makeup at the beach is anathema to summer sexiness), lighter shades of pale (pink or nude lipstick paired with iridescent, light-reflecting eyeshadow) and pulling hair back into a neat ponytail.

This month we're giving you the low-down on summer beauty: tips on how to maintain a cool office look in these hot, or overly air-conditioned, months (sandals are never appropriate but sleeveless tops can be); how to be a better bridesmaid (no whining, be supportive and gently steer the bride towards a flattering black bridesmaid dress); and how to treat yourself to a spa day in your own home. From the style front, our efficient and very cool trend-trackers tell us why we should grow in our eyebrows, get decal manicures, and ditch last year's jean jacket for the new cover up: the urban blazer.

So, enjoy the summer. But please, don't forget your sunhats -- and your purple-tinted, rhinestone-flecked J. Lo sunglasses.
