Brigitte Reiss-Andersen: Cosmetics Advisor

Q. How do I use an eyebrow pencil so that it subtly makes my eyebrows symmetrical and natural-looking?

A. Select an eyebrow pencil that matches your brow hair color the best. Women with very light hair -- including gray -- can go with a neutral light taupe. Learn to hold your pencil at an 170-degree angle so it almost lays flat against your eyebrow. The idea is to apply most of the color on the hair and not on the skin, which would look too harsh. Draw short little strokes, imitating little hairs. Be very light-handed. Finish off with a dusting of loose powder to blend it all together.

Q. I've been using the same moisturizer for years. Is it necessary to switch to something new?

A. You should switch moisturizers as your skin changes and needs new levels of hydration or other specific solutions. For example, during the dry winter months you may want to try an extra-emollient moisturizer to prevent dryness and chapping.
